In his youth, Alain Delon had a unique way of showing kindness. He often wore an army jacket, which he fondly referred to as the perfect way to warm up the stray puppies he encountered. Delon, now residing in Switzerland, is the proud owner of five shelters dedicated to dogs and cats rescued from the streets. His home is always bustling with the presence of these furry friends. “In my house, there are always many dogs 🐶🏡. They remind me of children,” Delon says.
His dedication to animal welfare is evident in his actions. When he learned about a disturbing case in the Pyrenees where a dog was doused in gasoline and set on fire, Delon took immediate action. He sent his veterinarian to the scene and even ensured that the perpetrators were prosecuted. In a groundbreaking move, a judge ordered that the abused dog, named Mambo, be present in the courtroom—a first in judicial history.
Delon’s commitment extends beyond just rescuing animals. He has even worked to secure legal representation for them, ensuring that their voices are heard. The sadists responsible for Mambo’s suffering received substantial prison sentences, thanks to Delon’s relentless efforts.
His love for animals dates back to his childhood. Delon recalls his first pet, a female Doberman named Gala. He once scolded her and accidentally hurt her tail. Seeing her cry profoundly affected him. “Since then, I understood everything, and now my dogs are always smiling,” he reflects.
Delon’s affection for his pets is unconditional. He often jokes, “Do you think my dogs know I’m Alain Delon? I don’t care! My dogs love me, no matter who I am or what I do. It is unconditional love, love without thinking, complete and true love!”
An active member of the Society for the Protection of Animals and a collaborator with Brigitte Bardot, Delon’s home currently houses eight dogs 🐕🏡. He also maintains a cemetery for his deceased pets, with 45 dogs laid to rest and a chapel he built at the center. After numerous requests, he received official permission to be buried there himself when the time comes, viewing it as the ultimate luxury.
Delon’s compassion extends beyond the living to the abused and tortured animals. On one occasion, he even dispatched a helicopter to rescue a cat whose leg had been severed by being tied to a car. The three-legged cat now enjoys a comfortable life in Delon’s mansion.
