It took a long time for Angelina Jolie to find her voice again.
The Oscar winner, 49, toldĀ The Hollywood ReporterĀ that she didnāt sing for a while beforeĀ her new film āMariaāĀ because one of her exes criticized her voice.
āIt was an out-of-body experience because I donāt sing,ā Jolie said in the interview published Friday. āI had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing. It was a relationship I was in. And so I just assumed I couldnāt really sing.ā
āIād been to theater school, so it was weird that it even had an effect on me,ā she continued. āI just kind of adapted to this personās opinion. So it took me getting past a lot of things to start singing.ā
SheĀ was married to Miller, 51,Ā from 1996 to 1999.
HerĀ marriage to Thornton, 69,Ā lasted from 2000 to 2003.
Last but not least,Ā Jolieās romance with PittĀ began in 2005 when they fell in love on the set of āMr. and Mrs. Smith.ā They tied the knot in 2014 but separated two years laterĀ after an alleged violent argument on a plane.
BrangelinaāsĀ divorce settlement negotiationsĀ areĀ stillĀ ongoing. The exes share three biological children, Shiloh, 18, and 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox, and three adopted children, sons Maddox, 23,Ā and Pax, 20,Ā and daughter Zahara, 19.
While doing press for āMaria,ā Jolie was reportedly asked about her divorce from Pitt, butĀ she immediately shut down the question.
Jolie and Pittās contentious divorce includes fighting over custody of their children, division of assets and their legal battle over the sale of their French winery.
The āEternalsā actress notablyĀ accused Pitt of being abusiveĀ towards her and their children, which he has denied.
Pitt appears to be estranged from his six kids. Some of the Jolie-Pitt children have even gone as far asĀ dropping their fatherās surname.
In āMaria,ā directed by Pablo LarraĆn, Jolie stars asĀ the late opera singer Maria Callas.
She burst into tears when the filmĀ received an 8-minute standing ovationĀ at Venice Film Festival on August 29.
In her interview with THR, Jolie said she learned a lot about her voice during the seven months that she learned how to sing opera.
āI thought I had a low voice my whole life. I was explaining [to the singing instructor] that my voice is deeper, and he said, āNo, youāre actually a soprano,ā ā she shared.
āAnd probably something happened. Your voice changes when you go through different things in your life. So that was a shock. That was very strange,ā Jolie added.
She also revealed thatĀ her sons Maddox and Pax were on set with her when she was filming āMaria.ā
āI have never had a set where my family is not allowed to be there because Iām focusing ā Iām not that person,ā she explained. āYou can climb all over me or visit. It really meant a lot that my boys were with me onĀ āMaria.ā When I would have really heavy times, they would come over and just give me a hug or a cup of tea.ā
āThat was probably one of the more intense things was that āusually when Iām expressing that much pain, itās not in front of my children,ā Jolie went on. āYou really try to hide from your children how much pain and sadness you carry. And so for them to be with you when youāre expressing it at such a level, I think it was the first time they ever heard me cry like that. Thatās usually for the shower.ā
